MAU FOREST

Class: Menengai High School | By: BETTY

This is in addition to an earlier article I presented on the dangers facing our dear flamingoes in Lake Nakuru.Coincidentally the waters that feed the lake all originate from a massive tree cover known as the Mau Forest .So for the lake to have diminished the danger emanates from the destruction that has been done on the forest. Many people were settled in that area and thus started the long journey of destruction.Alot of logging and cutting down of wood for firewood and charcoal burning took place.Since it was a lucrative business, doors were open for many people who got the opportunity to make a quick buck and subsequently the endangering of the forest cover. All the tributary lakes that were safe in this forest continued dwindling until now some are no longer there or have become seasonal rivers. The same rivers were the same ones feeding lake Nakuru so now the feedback has lessened and lessened. This has also contributed largely to the changing weather patterns in the region thus affecting the lake waters. My plea is that if we are to save the flamingoes then we also need to save our large forest cover the Mau forest. At hand we now have two issues to be tackled but which will eventually be saving a great heritage and history of our lovely bird-THE FLAMINGO.

Mankind has indeed dealt himself a blow. This is in the name of the Mau Forest.Once a serene and beautiful forest now it no longer can be admired. The precious quietness is no moreTheir is all kinds of pollution,if not from noise then from smoke.Charcoal burning and logging has taken root so much that it scares to think of the consequences. The once beautiful and quiet forests have been destroyed beyond recognitionThe ozone layer is being destroyed and the effects that come with global warming can now be felt greatly.Water catchment areas have been depleted and now problem of water for our wildlife and the locals is the order of the day.We must come together and stop this menace because our children need this forest in future.Mau forest is a clear manifestation of the cruelty of human to nature.Lets save the mau forest since it is the livelihood of many.

The Climate Change Adaptation in Africa is organizing a workshop that aims to address the critical need for climate change adaptation and the food security issue. With the climate change has come about extremes such as floods and drought to a great extend. This has led to into shifts in the patterns of temperatures and rainfall which are no longer helpful to the communities in their farming activities. The workshop is to help to create a long term solution and management of climate risk. This will eventually lead to how best farmers can address the different patterns and to have a solution to the threat to food security. This has been a great problem because of over reliance in farming to meet our daily bread. It would help alot so that farmers can be ready for any eventuality.I want to support this workshop wholly and hope it is going to be a great success.

A kenyan inventor has invented a cheap solar cooker. It is made from two cardboards which use reflective foil and black paint to maximise absorption of solar energy. To retain the heat and water, the cooking pot is covered with something transparent. The temperatures can reach upto 80degrees.The cooker can be used for sterilising water, boiling or baking food. The inventor hopes it can help alot in making solar cooking widespread in the developing world as opposed to the cutting down of trees for fuel.As many as 2million people the world over rely on firewood as their primary source of fuel.It would reduce the cutting down of tree causing deforestation.
