In commemorating the World Environment Day in 2009, on 5th June 2009 Tanzania Youth Environmental Network (TAYEN) and Vodacom Foundation conducted clean up event at Kigamboni Ferry station. The event involved 120 secondary students from Mbezi Beach, Makongo and Tegeta, students from University of Dar es Salaam and Sokoine University of Agriculture and staff from Vodacom. In the event participants collected solid waste, cleaned up Ferry station on both sides, installed waste management signboards with environmental education messages and distributed 20 Large Liter bins that were distributed at Ferry station to minimize haphazard waste dumping
