A DJ has become Africas youngest president

Hello, we'd like to tell you something about the poitical situation in our country. This...

Hello, we'd like to tell you something about the poitical situation in our country. This year Madagascar experienced total chaos, above all in Antananarivo the capital and largest city of Madagascar. Things fell apart in our usually calm island as anti-government protesters burned, looted and vandalized. Since March we have the youngest president of Africa. Andry Rajoelina is a former disc jockey nicknamed after the French express train "TGV" for his rapid fire rhetoric and personality. He accused the president of being a dictator starving his people. After an extended power struggle, Rajoelina had the backing of the military when he walked into Ravalomanana's office on March 17, 2009 and declared himself president. According to the MAdagascar constitution, Rajoelina is sic years too young to be president, who must be 40 to lead. Most world leaders did not attend his formal installation on March 21, 2008. The tensions are going on, at least 130 people have been killed. During the transition in the government, people have been illegally hunting and logging in Marojejy National Park and other conservation areas in Madagascar. While the new Malagasy government is otherwise preoccupied and some park rangers have left their posts, armed groups are cutting down valuable rosewood trees. Laws prohibiting the export of rosewood were repealed in January 2009, so the illegally acquired logs can be sold and exported for profit. Extracting resources from these conservation areas is likely to threaten already critically endangered species such as the silky sifaka lemur one of the top 25 most endangered primates in the world.

Thanks for your answers. We are happy to see that you know some things about Madagascar. I tell you...

Thanks for your answers. We are happy to see that you know some things about Madagascar. I tell you some more: Madagascar is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Africa with a population of more than 18 million. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. It is the home of five percent of the world's plant and animal species, 80 percent of which are unique to Madagascar. Among its most notable examples of biodiversitiy are the lemur infraorder of primates, three endemic bird families and six endemic baobab species. The primary language spoken in Madagascar is Malagasy.Madagascar's long isolation from the neighboring continents has resulted in a unique mix of plants and animals, many found nowhere else in the world; some ecologists refer to Madagascar as the "eighth continent."The eastern, or windward side of the island is home to tropical rainforests, while the western and southern sides of the island, which lie in the rain shadow of the central highlands, are home to tropical dry forests, thorn forests, and deserts and xeric shrublands. Madagascar's dry deciduous forests have generally been preserved better than the eastern rain forests or the high central plateau, presumably due to historically less population density and scarcity of water. There has been some slash-and-burn activity in the eastern and western dry forests as well as the central high plateau, reducing certain forest habitat and applying pressure to some endangered species. Slash-and-burn is a method sometimes used by shifting cultivators to create short-term yields from marginal soils. When practiced repeatedly, or without intervening fallow periods, the nutrient poor soils may be exhausted or eroded to an unproductive state. The resulting increased surface runoff from burned lands has caused significant erosion and resulting high sedimentation to western rivers. I would like to have your addresses.

This is a message from your partnerclass in Menengai. If you'd like to I arrange a telephone-interview with Betty Odari so that she can tell you more about her ideas and visions. She has lots of plans! This is what she likes to tell you (and please go to the profile of your partnerclass as well, have a look at the pictures and what she already wrote. ) «Greetings,I am Betty, project coordinator for Kenya,I would like to say that this whole idea to change this world for the better is a very noble and important affair. As time goes by we see that most natural creations that were initially there do not exist any more ,mostly due to human encroachment on what was previously uninhabited.I am afraid that soon if nothing is done to stop this menace on natural surroundings worse is yet to come.Involving young people is definitely a great idea because at the end of it all we really do need their voice. This is their future and we do want them to inherit a beautiful future that coming generations are going to be proud of.Lets come up together with lots of ideas and solutions that can be shared all over to avert a looming disaster in this beautiful world of ours, lets join hands to make it a better place as it once was.Hotstuffchillout is one of the many solutions that can bring that positive change.» So please have a look at her profile and it would be great if you all could post a comment to what she writes. Cheers, Julia
