09. Looking back and thinking ahead

a) Imagine it would be possible to turn back the clock a hundred years. What do you think we would do differently?

b) We are naturally not able to turn the clock back, but we can learn from the past. What kind of information does the past reveal?

In many places the environment is severely destroyed. To me conserving it is the most important thing. Human factors are the major factors that degrade our environment. It is estimated that 80 percent of the world inhabitants use wood for their uses and this is continuing to destroy our forests. Anexample is Sahel desert in West Africa. It's territory has been stripped of trees for over 100 kilometers in all dirctions, fifteen years ago the area was thick with trees. Without doubt many of man's actions have been well intended but it is so often that man does not know the consequences of his or her actions. Man has so upset the balance of life that we threaten the land that supports us and through that our own survival. For me I would love to start conserving the environment in my school by planting trees, making sure that we live in a clean environment and educating students on the measures to be taken and the consequences that follow if we destroy our environment. All that is needed to be done is taking seriousness in matters affecting our environment only if we take corrective measure our world would be changed into a lovely environment. I hope I will be there to enjoy it and live in total harmony with the environment forever. Wouldn't you like to join me? Anne Onyaru

a) If you were able to freely choose, which kind of life you woul like to lead – what would this involve?

b) Do you have the feeling you are free to choose what the real prospects of your future life will be?

c) If you answer no, what do you think is lacking and therefore negatively influencing your personal decisions for the future?

(a) My name is Diana Osebe, I am seventeen years old. I am a student in menengai High School in Form Three. Among the eight subjects I take Mathematics is my best. In future I would like to pursue higher education in paediatrics because I want to be a paeditrician.

b) To achieve this I try to put as much effort as I can in my studies.

11. Things you enjoy doing

a) What kind of things do you really enjoy doing?

b) How often can you do the things you really enjoy? (And, why are you not able to do them all the time?)

a) My name is Otiewo Amondi Edith. I'll be turning seventeen next month in July. I am dark in compexion and a little bit tall. My hobbies are reading, swimming, playing basketball, singing and most of all, dacing. Singing and dancing make me happy and add humour to my life. In school, I play basketball and I am in the school team. I play as a guard or as a dribbler. I run very fast and I am also a fast learner.

b) Every evening after school I go for practice in the basketball pitch for about one hour. This helps me to at least clear my mind after a lot of studying. It also helps me relax so that when I go home, I find my mind fresh and ready to take up any information. I love basketball because it teaches me how to use my brains. i t is a game of brains. So says my coach. It helps me think rationally thus keeping me alert all the time.
